Tyvek comes in many grades — and choosing the wrong one can affect everything from printability to the way your finished product feels in someone's hands. This guide breaks down the three most commonly specified grades for product manufacturers and designers, so you can make an informed decision before ordering samples.

At first glance, 1056D and 1443R look similar — both around 43–45 g/m², both classified as "soft structure." But they behave very differently in your hands and under a press. Here's why.
Understanding Tyvek's Structure Types
All DuPont Tyvek® is made from flash-spun HDPE filaments. But the way those filaments are bonded gives each grade its distinctive character.
📘 Type 10 — Bonded Structure
1073D and 1056D are Type 10 materials. The HDPE fibers are thermally bonded throughout the sheet, giving it a paper-like stiffness and crispness. It tears cleanly, holds a sharp crease, and has a smooth printing surface. This is the classic "Tyvek feel" that most people are familiar with.
🌿 Type 14 — Lightly Bonded (Soft Structure)
1443R is a Type 14 material. The fibers are more loosely bonded, giving it a soft, fabric-like drape — closer to nonwoven fabric than to paper. It's more flexible, more conformable to curved surfaces, and has a slightly different printing behavior compared to Type 10.

The Key Differences You Need to Know
1073D vs 1056D: Same Structure, Different Weight
These two are closely related — both Type 10, both crisp and paper-like, both excellent for printing. The difference is purely weight:
- 1073D (75 gsm) feels more substantial — better for wallets, structured bags, and heavier packaging applications
- 1056D (43 gsm) is thinner and more flexible — ideal for wristbands, lightweight labels, and situations where bulk must be minimized
⚖ Rule of Thumb
If your product needs to hold its shape or stand up on its own → go with 1073D. If it needs to be thin, flexible, or worn on the body → 1056D is the better choice.
1056D vs 1443R: Same Weight, Completely Different Feel
Both are around 43–45 gsm, but they feel like completely different materials:
- 1056D is stiff and paper-like — it crinkles, crease, and feels like a thick piece of paper
- 1443R is soft and fabric-like — it drapes, bends smoothly, and feels much closer to a nonwoven textile
✂ Sewing Note
Both grades can be sewn, but 1443R is significantly easier to sew due to its softer structure. For garments or bags where sewing is the primary construction method, 1443R is the strongly preferred choice.
"1056D crinkles like paper. 1443R drapes like fabric. They weigh almost the same — but they feel like completely different worlds."

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1073D or 1056D better for wallets?
1073D is almost universally preferred for wallets. The heavier weight gives the wallet better structure and a more premium feel. 1056D can be used for ultra-slim or minimalist wallet designs where reducing bulk is a priority.
Can I sew all three grades?
Yes, all three are sewable. However, 1443R is the most sewing-friendly due to its soft, fabric-like structure. For 1073D and 1056D, use a sharp needle and reduce feed dog tension if needed.
Are colored versions available for all three grades?
Colored Tyvek is available across multiple grades, though availability varies by supplier. White remains the most widely stocked. For specific color requirements, consult your supplier about current stock or minimum order requirements for custom colors.
Which grade is most commonly in stock?
1073D and 1056D in white are the most universally stocked grades globally. Colored options and softer grades like 1443R may require ordering in advance or sourcing from specialist suppliers.
How do I know which side to print on for 1443R?
For 1443R (Type 14), printing on the smooth side is recommended for best results. The smooth side can be identified by comparing both sides — one will feel slightly more textured than the other.
Can I get samples before ordering?
Yes — most reputable Tyvek suppliers offer physical sample sets. Seeing and touching the material in person is strongly recommended before finalizing a grade choice, especially for products where hand feel matters.
